Symphony Orchestra - Flavors of Folk Music: Bartók and Sibelius

Composed in 1923 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the merging of the two cities of Buda and Pest, Béla Bartók’s Dance Suite reflects the flavor of folk songs from Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Northern Africa. Jean Sibelius’s charming Symphony No. 3 in C Major marks a transition point between the romantic intensity of his first two symphonies and the more austere complexity of his later works in the genre. The three-movement creation is classical in its economy of melodic figuration, harmony, and scope, with a subtly brooding, austere, and eternally soulful character that permeates the whole.
